In 1979, the Perramón – San Román family, with a bold and entrepreneurial vision, opened the doors of La Taberna del Gourmet, next to the first family business, the then-famous “Frankfurt”.
In those years, we had only a bar and a small dining area on the mezzanine, which was known as “L’entresol,” a Valencian word that means “The mezzanine.”
This was the beginning of what we now know as La Taberna del Gourmet, a place that has grown and adapted over the years under the imprint of María José San Román: “He who does not take risks, does not win.”
A few years later, in 1997, we changed locations and significantly expanded the restaurant, becoming a landmark and meeting place for several generations. We not only received local customers but also tourists who found in La Taberna a unique experience: high-quality products in a friendly and familiar atmosphere.
So much so that in 2011, the Terraza del Gourmet was opened, located on the Explanada de Alicante, a space to enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner with views of the port. Offering our customers a complete Alicante experience: charming views with the quality and service that characterizes and distinguishes us.
That same year, another location was opened inside El Corte Inglés on Federico Soto, where we aimed to be closer to our customers in their daily lives.
Looking towards the near future, we have plans to expand the first floor of La Taberna del Gourmet and name it “L’entresol,” as a tribute to that space that marked our beginnings.
We carefully select the ingredients for our products, always focusing on quality, sustainability, and local sourcing.
Terramón, our vegetable garden.
In 2020, we put into production Huerta Terramón, a 15,000 m2 estate in Mutxamel, from where the majority of vegetables we use in our kitchen come from.
On the estate, we work with biodynamic and permaculture principles, without the use of any chemicals, creating a fertile horticultural and fruit-growing space from a previously abandoned and compacted land. The warm temperatures in Alicante, efficient water usage, and organic matter utilization have allowed us to obtain delicious results that we serve on the table today.
Meats and Fish
The meats are organic, and some of them have Protected Geographical Indication. And our fish is of the highest quality.
San Román, the bread of our daily life
Every day, we put into operation the Pan San Román Bakery, which supplies La Taberna del Gourmet and the rest of the Gourmet group restaurants with handcrafted bread and pastries made from top-quality ingredients.
María José San Román
María José San Román was born in Valladolid, but she arrived in Alicante at a very young age during her childhood. Here, she began her career in law, which she later abandoned to dedicate her life to the kitchen, where she found her place.
María José is an energetic woman, full of curiosity, and always in constant evolution. She started by reading everything about cooking in foreign publications and worked hand in hand with Michelin-starred chefs, such as Joan Roca from El Celler de Can Roca.
As a faithful ambassador of Mediterranean cuisine and the traditional flavors of rice and saffron, she travels the world showcasing the best of our land, as well as in the restaurants of the Gourmet Group. María José dedicates a significant part of her time to research on classic products of our gastronomy, such as saffron, rice, or Extra Virgin Olive Oil, of which she is an international ambassador.
Her principles are very evident in each restaurant and every action in which she decides to participate. Additionally, she is the president of “Mujeres en Gastronomía” (Women in Gastronomy), an association that seeks to give more visibility to women in the hospitality industry.
Grupo Gourmet was founded in 1975 with the creation of Frankfurt, now known as Tribeca. Since that date, our passion for gastronomy has been growing along with our experience.
After the success of Tribeca, four years later, the idea of La Taberna del Gourmet emerged – a gathering place around the classic bar, where people could enjoy fresh products, gastronomic classics, and the best from the sea.
By the mid-90s, we decided to go all-in with Monastrell. First at Playa Muchavista, where later our grill restaurant La Vaquería would be located, and then in the center of Alicante.
In recent years, in addition to our restaurants, you can also find Tribeca and Taberna del Gourmet corners at El Corte Inglés in Federico Soto (Alicante).
Our gastronomic commitment is based on quality ingredients, attention to detail, and sustainability, which are fundamental pillars of our group’s restaurants.
